Meet Kathy
Thank you for visiting the Harrington for North Carolina Senate website.
As someone who grew up here, I share the same values as the citizens of Gaston County. Raising my family, working and volunteering in this community for many years has kept me involved and aware of how the laws made in Raleigh affect our everyday lives.
My husband Michael and I have two wonderful daughters. It was my pleasure to have spent many hours volunteering in their classrooms at several Gaston County Schools. Recently, I’ve served on the Boards of the Gaston County Museum of Art and History, Piedmont Charter School and Gaston Dance Theatre.
My 2008 run for NC Senate provided me the opportunity to speak with thousands of Gaston County residents. Citizens are looking for responsive, accountable government. North Carolina is overtaxing families, individuals and businesses. The current ‘spend then tax’ system is breaking the backs of hard working North Carolinians everywhere.
As part of the 2009-10 budget, Lawmakers in North Carolina introduced more than $1 billion in new taxes. Of the three major taxes typically imposed at the state level—income, sales and corporate —North Carolina Legislators saw fit to raise all three. Sales tax went up to 7.75%, corporate tax rates are at 6.9% the HIGHEST in the southeast.
It’s time to reduce the tax burden on individuals and businesses and stop spending money we don’t have. You can’t do that with your personal budget and the state shouldn’t do it with your tax dollars. It’s time for common sense solutions in Raleigh.
